In China, stone lions are commonly placed in pairs, conventionally with a male on the left and a female on the right. This arrangement reflects a traditional ordering of gender and yin and yang.

I photographed the female stone lion during the day, then projected its image beside it at night to form a new pair. In place of a male and a female, the pairing consists of two female lions: one three-dimensional, the other two-dimensional.

The work reconfigures an established cultural iconography, using projection to propose a different relationship.
